Design Challenge: This 1950’s story-and-a-half home looked dated and dull to the homeowners. They wanted a more traditional style living room that would enable them to showcase the antiques they’d inherited and would also indulge their love of color.
Solution: To create a traditional look, the existing mantel is enhanced with wood mouldings and the rest of the room is classically divided with a chair rail and panel moulding. Highlighting the renewed fireplace are antique silver wall sconces mounted over the mantel where the clients’ heirloom porcelain urns and Chinese tomb figures are now displayed. Striped wallcovering in shades of red and tailored gold silk draperies give the room warmth. French-inspired paisley print now covers the lounge chairs and a new apple green kidney-shaped sofa keeps the room from becoming too stuffy.
