Design Challenge: The clients wanted to redo a modest-sized kitchen that hadn’t been updated since the 1950’s, when it was built. However, the clients’ budget dictated that Indicia work with existing cupboards and floor space.
Solution: At Indicia’s recommendation, the cabinets were transformed with moulding, cornucopia appliqués, light green paint, and pewter hardware. A maple butcher block countertop replaces the 1950’s Formica, and handmade Italian tile creates a backsplash. The previous sink and cabinet were removed to make way for a granite countertop and a custom farmhouse-style sink cabinet made from a scavenged bed frame and two turned wood legs. Cheerful French country print curtains conceal the plumbing. An imported breakfront with aviary wire and red rubbed finish is placed opposite the sink to continue the provincial look. Subtly patterned light gold wallcovering replaces the 1950’s aqua flower print. The finished effect feels like taking a step back in time to the comfort and charm of a European country kitchen.
